Foraging patterns of bees on watermelon (<em>Citrullus lanatus</em> Thunb.) flowers in Panama

چکیده
Watermelon is one of the most important fruit crops in world, but their flowers require bees for pollination. In this study we determine bee species visiting watermelon flowers, daily visits and resource they forage during 84 observation days on Los Santos, Panama. Native bees, especially stingless represented visits, so probably play a very role pollination within zone. The frequent were N. perilampoides (58.7%), A. mellifera (23%), P. peckolti (4%). Most foraged nectar, with similar numbers between staminate pistillate flowers. Honeybees dedicated almost half (47.7%) pollen collection, made 7:00 8:00 hours, whereas picked up 9:00 hours. Nectar shorter than overall, honeybees shortest to We found significant differences foraging patterns resources period (Friedman P<0.05). also characteristics (size, color sociability) hour day significantly influenced flower (GLMM Our results can be useful predicting behavior some Central American species, managing protecting those improving production local crops.

Varroa destructor Mites Can Nimbly Climb from Flowers onto Foraging Honey Bees
Varroa destructor, the introduced parasite of European honey bees associated with massive colony deaths, spreads readily through populations of honey bee colonies, both managed colonies living crowded together in apiaries and wild colonies living widely dispersed in natural settings. Mites are hypothesized to spread between most managed colonies via phoretically riding forager bees when they en...
متن کاملConical Epidermal Cells Allow Bees to Grip Flowers and Increase Foraging Efficiency
The plant surface is by default flat, and development away from this default is thought to have some function of evolutionary advantage. Although the functions of many plant epidermal cells have been described, the function of conical epidermal cells, a defining feature of petals in the majority of insect-pollinated flowers, has not. The location and frequency of conical cells have led to specu...
متن کاملScaling of nectar foraging in orchid bees.
Morphology influences the rate at which foraging bees visit nectar flowers, the quantity of nectar they must consume to fuel their activities, and, consequently, the profitability of flower species. Because feeding time is a major determinant of visitation rate, I used a biomechanical model to examine how energy intake rate (E) varies with sucrose concentration, body mass (M), and proboscis len...
